YET FROM THOSE FLAMES NO LIGHT — A 2019 Finalist for The Daphne du Maurier Award!

A novel by Maria Ostrowski

When a troubled artist dies in a shipwreck, his dark secrets rise and threaten the life and loves of his passionate friend — a poet who must now choose between saving his family and the woman he loves.

#

Homeless after the 1929 crash, 20-year-old Felix Jolicoeur returns to Cliffwood College, devastated by a family scandal and the loss of his passionate friend — the blue-blooded artist, Will Meriwether — who disappeared from campus and died in a shipwreck after funding Felix’s return.

Haunted by his friend’s death, Felix seeks to understand why Will left, but as he digs into Meriwether family secrets, he journeys into a minefield of corruption and deadly disease that forces him to choose between saving his own family and the woman he loves. Yet, things get even worse when Felix discovers a murder — and if he continues digging — he could implicate himself.

Against a backdrop of The Berkshires at the start of The Great Depression, YET FROM THOSE FLAMES NO LIGHT explores a coming-of-age struggle with love and loss, and issues of class, mental illness, and the impact of syphilis in the pre-penicillin era.
